Editor:

It is very sad to see a Councilman so upset with what his constituents have been trying to tell the Village Council of Marvin. He attacks them with bully tactics continually. We have freedom of speech. At least, he had to respond. His rant at the last VC meeting was deplorable.

How do they (VC) intend to pay for the village community center? I have been to the meetings where they say they have the money and how well they have taken care of the citizens of Marvin, but there is no new cost analysis for the next 5 or even 10 years down the road. This is necessary due to the other priorities like traffic due to new developments and first responders. They hope that Toll Brothers (developers of the new Preserve at Marvin) will put up most of the money to fix Newtown and Marvin roads but I have not seen that confirmed. We have just seen the projected plan.
He and two of the other Village of Marvin Councilmen are pushing so hard for this new town hall and community center that YES we wanted but over 5 years ago. That was before the economy was showing signs that it was not coming back. Our own developments have amenities and those that don't spend time at their churches, the library, and other centers. There is no reported NEED for a new community center.
The $400k is what they say is ALL that they will spend. Well, they have not taken in account the new out building, new tools and caretaker to watch over the new gardens and Town Hall. The new landscaping and maintenance thereof. Nor the late night security and extra patrols. And, dare say, the new event planner that they are so sure of that they will need to plan events that will bring in the much needed revenue. They believe they can get up to $5000 per wedding. Well, they need a state of the art kitchen, furnished dining hall and a paved parking lot to begin with.

Yes, it will be cheaper than Weddington's and Waxhaw's new town halls but why is there the need to do what they do? Because the Village Council says they do not want to be a "paper" town. They say we need more respect. More services. I say we moved here for low taxes and the country feel = the paper town. It is fine for most folks. The survey they sent out was so skewed to building that is made most citizens not want to turn their surveys in. Not that was a wise choice ,but it puts a light on how the community feels about ramming new spending down their throats.

What is so repugnant is that they continue to not listen to the people of Marvin and that they are passing this passive park off to all of those around it. Well, I am not so sure that this passive park will be passive any longer. It will be invasive to those subdivisions surrounding it. I wish someone would interview those that live in Waldon Pond to see if the promises that Marvin stated will stand true or will there be lights and parties late into the night!!! No more crickets and peaceful nights for them!

Do you support abortion rights? I'm just wondering because if there was a genuine risk of death here then there would have been an issue long ago. Yet abortion causes death. So again I ask, which is a great danger, the machine gun fire (which is only faster semi-automatic weapons fire) or abortion?

The deluge of seeds representing the ants has already begun via the UCPS Education Advocates (aka Green Shirts) who have dominated the meeting room of the County Commission meetings during the past two months. Not only do we show up and speak at BOCC meetings, we also share information with family, friends, co-workers, neighbors, and others. We use traditional and social media AND we vote! Be warned, GRASSHOPPERS: the ANTS will begin by moving the rubber tree plant (getting enough signatures on the TK petition) and then follow up by (re) moving you as we vote this and future Novembers...

Oh my goodness. I had no idea Parker Mills had made those comments at a meeting. How dare he try to determine who could call Union County their home. He has always been divisive and arrogant, and now it is caught on tape. Union County is made up of alot of different people from alot of different places. Most of the people want the same things (a good safe home and a place where their children can get a great education), it disgusts me that a former politician has such disdain for people that were not born here. Union County is my home and it is a great place. The politicians such as Parker, and Johnson and Thomas try to keep this county divided, it works for their purposes. I live for the day that the "ants" join together and expose these politicians for what they truly are. So refreshing to see one little ant (Commissioner Kuehler) stand up to these school yard bullies!

Native, the kids won't get a good education without teacher assistants. Many studies to back that up. I agree that it is not the county's responsibility to fund the TA positions, but since the schools are the number 1 draw for people moving to Union County, the county should take the utmost care of that asset. The schools have not gotten more money for 3 years now, yet the student population has grown by the thousands. The schools haven't asked for that money - yet. Do they have waste? I'm sure they do and if the commissioners would work WITH the schools instead of insulting them, we might get somewhere. But unfortunately they refuse to do that, so no compromise. What would you suggest the school system use for their reasoning for asking for more money? It is about the kids and always will be. Their business is kids so it is unreasonable to state that they are using kids for political gain. The people that have moved here are supporting the county, take a look at the tax records. The revenue comes from the new people and guess who sold the land to the developers....the true southerners. Now who is complaining? Who is the real cause of this? Quit the blame game and realize that if you build it they will come. Would you rather completely damage the quality of life and education and have people moving out? That would help the tax rate for sure. You have a right to your opinion, I just wish you would be realistic about it. Bless your heart.

I think it is important to everyone that these kids get a good education. I have a second grader in marshville elementary ans want to see her succeed. I am aware that funding has become a big problem, not only with the school system but with all governmental agencies. I would love nothing more than to see all teachers and teacher assistants keep their jobs. With that being said i do hope our current commissioners stand their ground and hold the board of education accountable for the money they receive. It isnt a good practice to just hand money out when ever they ask for it. Im sure next year will be the same and the year after that. Stop using the kids as an emotional tool to get more money. Should commissioners give more money? I say probably a little bit but not all that the school board is asking for. Tough economic times are hard for everyone. Its time to get real solutions. Surely their is a compromise out here that can be reached. School board cut other areas as much as possible. Commissioners find some money to meet them part of the way. No matter what happens im sure the kids will get used again next year for the same problems... By the way no way will i ever sign a petition for tracy to get on ballot. And come november i will not support her then either. As a native union county citizen i find it interesting that everyone wants to move here then when they get here all they seem to want to do is complain about everyone else moving here. Im glad you guys are here, paying all that money on your over priced houses. Its good for our tax revenue. Now spend some of that money in union county instead of going across the county line. Us true southerners will be polite, and respectful. But please do the same. Stop belly aching about a issue that you helped cause. Lets work together and find solutiins. I hope you all have a great day. Stay cool...

You know the saying, "those that live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones", Johnson doesn't seem to get that. Also, the saying "you reap what you sow", Johnson doesn't seem to get that either. I could quote all day long, but you get the point. Guess Johnson should accuse himself of being a "bold-faced liar".

Anyone who thinks that a person likes subjecting themselves to ridicule, lies, attacks, and pure disdain is simply nuts. Commissioner Kuehler has been subjecting herself to this for almost 2 years, yet she is willing to do it for 4 more years. Why? Because she believes in the people in the county and believes in what democracy is supposed to be about, representing the people. She has stepped up at the REQUEST of the people! Even not knowing everything Commissioner Kuehler has done for the citizens, she would get my support on that basis alone.

OMG! Go to Thomas' commissioner comments. He gets caught in another lie - right on camera. He invited people to ask questions and come to the podium and when a lady (you can't see who, but you can hear her) approaches the podium to ask him a question, he looks to Simpson, who promptly uses his gavel, and the woman can be heard saying "didn't you ask people to approach?" (which he did) and Thomas LIES and says "I did not!".....OMG! How many lies is this guy gonna be caught in? Imagine how many lies go undetected. Listen to the boos and comments of the crowd, nobody is buying his crap!

You would think so, but these guys talk out of all orifices of their bodies! It's already known that Johnson could care less about the schools and the children, why would he bother to attend this meeting. He's not listening or hearing anyways.

It's not just western union county that would like to see Commissioner Kuehler on the ballot - it's the whole county. Just watch the commissioner meeting tapes. It's not just the school funding issue either, many people all over the county are VERY unhappy with Thomas, Johnson, and Simpson. Getting 5000 signatures is a herculean task, that's almost as many people that show up to vote in a primary. If people are paying attention, she would get alot more signatures than that though. Let's see if they are!

Ok...so, how then, do you classify those who were drafted into service during the Vietnam War?

Should those "soldiers" receive any less recognition or appreciation for their contribution because it was involuntary?

The monument is about remembrance, recognition, and preservation of historical information not widely known nor easy to find. It is about discussion and understanding; about bringing cultures and customs to the public for further explanation.

Thankfully, approval or not, Mr. Way has created dialogue and the interest for more knowledge. At the end of the day, that is the real purpose of a monument!

you must have missed the part about states rights and unfair taxes (Morrill Tariff) levied against the south. And all that other stuff about statees rights.

ALSO :
"According to federal census reports, on June 1, 1860 there were nearly 4.5 million Negroes in the United States, with fewer than four million of them living in the southern slaveholding states. Of the blacks residing in the South, 261,988 were not slaves. Of this number, 10,689 lived in New Orleans. The country's leading African American historian, Duke University professor John Hope Franklin, records that in New Orleans over 3,000 free Negroes owned slaves, or 28 percent of the free Negroes in that city."........
In 1860 there were at least six Negroes in Louisiana who owned 65 or more slaves The largest number, 152 slaves, were owned by the widow C. Richards and her son P.C. Richards, who owned a large sugar cane plantation. Another Negro slave magnate in Louisiana, with over 100 slaves, was Antoine Dubuclet, a sugar planter whose estate was valued at (in 1860 dollars) $264,000 (3). That year, the mean wealth of southern white men was $3,978 (4)..................

You need to do some of your own research instead of the black and white issues taught in pulbic schools that is contributiong to the division of races and prolonging racial unrest in this country.
If you have ever traveled outside the US you would see that racism does not exist everywhere.
It is taught in the US.

Well they sold the hospital but call it a "lease", they bad mouth the schools and will end up cutting the school budget, and they are busy getting more water and approving new homes (which will be a further drain on the schools they are not supporting). Guess the scribe got it right! The unfortunate thing is alot of people expected this to happen but chose to stay home and not vote -

An "I'm sorry for calling you a liar" but I stand by what I said (in other words, Mr. Haynes is a liar) is not an apology. This is pure political spin on Johnson's part - guess his feet are getting pretty burned being held to the fire.

So these guys ran on less government and open and transparant government. So far, we have gotten more government and the meetings are run with very little discussion, except from the ladies, so it appears the "discussions" are taking place outside the public eye. More of our tax dollars being used for useless consultants and studies, especially in this case as the commissioners should not be micro managers. These commissioners are reminiscent of ones in the past that got booted out of office and left with sorry reputations. Let's see if they listen to the thousands of people or if their arrogance and ignorance continues to shine.

This debate over a marker to "honor" black slaves who fought as Confederate soldiers is truly a debate over perspectives. History teaches that slaves were just that, slaves. They were forced to be slaves, not asked, or they would have been called indentured servants. I find it odd that slaves would be classified as Confederate soldiers because they would have been fighting to preserve the continuance of southern slavery, going against one of the main aims of the war in that it was to abolish slavery. These black men were not Confederate soldiers, they were Confederate slaves for Confederate soldiers. What facts do we have that implies they were of their own free will fighting for the Confederacy in an effort to preserve slavery? What facts do we have that implies they were of their own free will Confederate soldiers? If in fact they chose of their own free will to join the Confederacy and fight as soldiers against the North, should this not be seen as a slap in the face to the black community as a whole - slaves fighting for the right to remain as slaves. Not too long ago there was the fight over the Confederate flag at the state house, namely because it offended the black community because the "stars and bars represent repression, brutality and inequality." Shouldn't those black leaders who fought so hard to remove the flag be standing up and speaking out against any monument that honors any slave who fought to preserve slavery, rather than fight back against the Confederacy in abolishing slavery? Doesn't this really tarnish the fight against slavery in the mind of the black community? This is truly a dichotomy with regards to how these 10 slaves should be remembered. Should they be remembered as slaves who supported the fight to preserve slavery, or should they be remembered as slaves who fought as Confederate soldiers to preserve slavery? It is a unique piece of history that needs to be preserved, in a museum, just like the Confederate flag, but not on state property or city grounds with a marker.

So happy to see the revival of the VillageScribe. The people need to see what is going on in their government. Wish you would include the article in The Enquirer Journal where Johnson attacked a private citizen and Thomas called Dr. Davis/central office administration "drunken sailors". Wow! Conduct unbecoming an elected official.

Since Chairman Arp has chosen to run for State House District 69, does he plan on resigning his School Board seat on election day or earlier? Also: With Mr. Arp basically a shoo-in, has the Board voted to include District 3 on the November ballot in order to fill the seat now instead of having an appointee serve until 2014?

Thank you to anyone with helpful information,
John
